I absolutely LOVED this session, and it made me so excited to photograph Catherine and Casey again at their wedding in December! I met up with Catherine and Casey at Legare Waring for their engagement session. After talking for a few minutes, they told me, “just so you know, we are super awkward in front of a camera. I’m sure you take pictures all the time of people who know what they’re doing, but we don’t!”
First of all, definitely not. I would say 99.9% of my couples start off by telling me this exact thing. Just as I assured Catherine and Casey, it’s not your job to know what to do! It’s my job to make you comfortable in front of the camera and to make it look like you did in fact know what you were doing. I know when you look on my website or Instagram, it looks like all these couples pose for professional portraits on the daily. But I can promise you that they don’t, and I can also promise you that they were just as nervous as you. Not a single person on my website or my Instagram is a professional model. Not a single one! They are all real couples who definitely don’t make a living posing for the camera.
Why do I share this? Because I’m guessing that might be you, too. It’s always my goal during a photo session to make my couples’ personalities shine through. If you pick the right photographer, you should look at your photos and see your ACTUAL smile and your REAL laughter. I’m not about putting you in awkward poses and telling you to look at the camera and smile. Your session with me won’t just be taking photos, it will be about the two of you having fun together, and creating a memory.
So don’t let the fact that you’re “super awkward” make you miss out on photos to document your life. Let ME worry about taking the photos, and you just show up and be yourself.
And guess what? After the session was over, Casey even admitted that he had a little fun. The groom-to-be liked taking photos? My job here is done!
