If you’re planning a trip to Charleston with kids, you’re probably wondering what’s actually worth doing…not just what looks good on a list, but what your family will genuinely enjoy.
As a Charleston family photographer and a mom to a 6- and 4-year-old, we’re constantly out exploring this city together. Whether we’re at the beach, running around local parks, or finding the next kid-friendly spot to eat, our days are shaped around places that feel easy, fun, and welcoming for families.
After living in Charleston for over 15 years, I’ve had plenty of time to find the places that truly work! The ones where kids can be kids and parents can actually relax and enjoy the experience too. These are the spots we come back to again and again, and the ones I always recommend to families visiting the area.
Charleston Beaches
If you’re visiting Charleston in the summer, the beach is the obvious choice for a day out with your family! There’s honestly nothing my kids love more than running wild in the waves, building sandcastles, and finding seashells. We pack up our cooler and sit on the beach for hours on end in the summer! I can’t tell you how many sweet memories we’ve made while relaxing on the beach. My favorite beach with my kids is Folly Beach, as it’s laid back and has a lot of kid-friendly restaurants on the main drive. Isle of Palms also has some great vibes if you’re staying on the Mount Pleasant side of Charleston!
The Charleston Aquarium
If you need an indoor activity for a rainy or super humid day, this is my go-to! The Charleston Aquarium focuses on local flora and fauna, so you’re learning about what’s in the area. My kids loved the aquarium as young as 2 years old, and at 6 my son is still obsessed. They do a great job engaging the kids, and the sea turtle hospital is always a favorite.
James Island County Park
If your kids love big playgrounds, James Island County Park is a great morning or afternoon option! They have a massive playground that has options for both big and small kiddos. And if you bring your swimsuits, they also have a splash pad that’s great for small kids (and included in your entrance fee of $2/person!). There’s also a Splash Zone that’s great for kids a little bigger, with a separate fee from the entrance fee.
Holy City Brewery
My friends and I always joke that we go to breweries more now that we have kids than when we didn’t, but they’re just such great spaces for kids! Holy City Brewery is one of my favorites in Charleston. They have an amazing outdoor space with turf where kids can run wild, plenty of outdoor picnic tables, and REALLY good food and drinks. Need I say more?
One of the things I love most about Charleston is how naturally it invites you to slow down and spend time together. After all, isn’t that what vacation is all about?
If you’re visiting with your family, it’s such a meaningful time to document it. Having your photos taken while you’re here allows you to hold onto not just how your trip looked, but how it felt: relaxed, connected, and full of joy.
Long after the vacation ends, those images become something you can return to. Heirloom pieces that live in your home, reminding you of this season and the memories you made together in Charleston.
If you’re interested in creating tangible memories of your vacation to Charleston, I’m so happy to help with that. Simply email me here to get started!
