There is something so fleeting about those first days with a newborn. The tiny fingers. The sleepy stretches. The way your baby fits perfectly against your chest. The little sounds they make when they are almost asleep. The way your older child looks at their new sibling for the first time.
These are the moments I want to remember.
As a Charleston newborn photographer, I believe newborn photography should feel less like a photoshoot and more like a glimpse into your life during one of its most meaningful seasons.
At Taylor Rae Photography, my approach is natural, candid, and documentary-inspired. I want your photographs to feel like you—not overly posed, overly perfect, or filled with moments that never actually happened.
When families reach out to me, they often tell me they want photos that feel natural. They want to remember what their baby actually looked like. They want images of their toddler snuggling their new sibling. They want photographs of their family together that feel genuine and full of emotion. And most importantly, they don’t want to spend their entire newborn session worrying about getting the “perfect” photo.
That’s where a documentary approach comes in. Instead of directing every movement, I leave room for connection to happen naturally. I’ll gently guide you when needed, but I’m also watching for the little moments happening in between.
A kiss on the forehead. A baby’s tiny hand wrapped around Dad’s finger. Mom rocking her newborn by the window. A sibling crawling into bed for one more cuddle. The laugh that happens when someone says something silly.
Those are the photographs that become meaningful years from now.
Newborn life is beautifully imperfect. Babies cry. Toddlers get distracted. Someone needs a snack. Someone needs a diaper change. Sometimes the baby doesn’t want to sleep. That’s okay.
Actually, it’s part of the story.
I don’t expect your home or your family to look perfect. I don’t expect your toddler to cooperate for an entire session. And I certainly don’t expect your newborn to follow a schedule just because we have a camera in the room.
My job is to create space for your family to simply be together while I document what unfolds. Because someday, you may look back at the photographs and realize you don’t miss the perfectly posed image.
You miss this.
I love photographs that make you feel something. The images where you can almost hear your baby’s little noises. The ones where you remember exactly how your toddler smelled after a bath. The photograph that brings you right back to the way your husband held your newborn during those first exhausting, beautiful weeks.
That’s what storytelling photography is all about. Your newborn session becomes more than a collection of pretty photographs. It becomes a visual record of your family at this exact moment in time. And because your family will continue to grow and change, those photographs become incredibly meaningful.
They become part of your family’s story.
Digital images are wonderful, but there is something different about holding a photograph in your hands. A printed photograph doesn’t disappear into a camera roll with thousands of other images. It lives on your walls. It sits inside an album. Your children can hold it years from now.
That’s why I believe in creating heirloom photographs that are meant to be enjoyed for generations. I want you to have photographs that your children will eventually look at and say, “That’s me when I was a baby.” And I want you to be able to tell them the story behind the photograph.
Where you were. What your home looked like. How tiny they were. How you felt.
Those little details matter.
Your experience with Taylor Rae Photography isn’t just about showing up with a camera.
As a full-service Charleston newborn photographer, my goal is to make the entire experience feel intentional and easy. From planning your session to helping you think through what to wear, choosing locations, documenting your family naturally, and helping you decide how you want to preserve your photographs afterward, I’m here to guide you through the process.
You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to know what to do with your hands. You don’t need to create the moments. Just bring your family. I’ll take care of the rest.
Your baby will only be this tiny for a little while. Their little wrinkles will disappear. Their fingers will get longer. Their newborn stretches will turn into crawling, walking, and eventually running through your house. This season goes quickly. My goal is to slow it down through photographs. To document the quiet moments, the messy moments, the joyful moments, and all the little in-between moments that make your family yours. Because the photographs you treasure most may not be the ones where everyone is looking at the camera.
They may be the photograph of your baby’s face resting against your chest. Your toddler kissing their sibling. Your family piled together on the couch. Your husband looking at your baby when he thinks nobody is watching.
The everyday moments that don’t feel extraordinary now, but someday will mean everything.
If you’re looking for a Charleston newborn photographer who values natural connection, candid storytelling, and photographs that feel authentic to your family, I’d love to document this season for you. At Taylor Rae Photography, I create natural, documentary-inspired newborn photographs designed to become heirlooms; not just images that live on your phone.
Your family doesn’t need to perform for the camera. You just need to be together.
I’ll be there to tell the story.
