What to Wear for Maternity Photos
Choosing what to wear for maternity photos can feel overwhelming at first, but it really comes down to one simple goal: wearing something that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and connected to this season of life. As a Charleston maternity photographer, I always guide my clients toward outfits that highlight your bump naturally while still feeling like you.
Flowy dresses are one of the most popular choices because they photograph beautifully in movement. Soft fabrics that catch the wind create a dreamy, effortless look; especially in outdoor Charleston locations like beaches, marshes, or open fields. Neutral tones, soft pastels, and earthy colors tend to work best because they keep the focus on you and your connection, not the outfit.
Form-fitting dresses are also a beautiful option because they gently highlight your bump in a simple, elegant way. Many moms choose to wear something fitted for part of their session and then switch into a more flowy dress for variety.
For partners, simple and neutral clothing works best. Coordinating colors, rather than matching exactly creates a more natural and timeless look. Soft whites, creams, beige, denim, and muted tones all photograph well without distracting from the connection between you.
Barefoot looks work beautifully for beach maternity sessions, while simple shoes or sandals are perfect for more styled locations. Accessories should be kept minimal so the focus stays on emotion and connection rather than details.
Most importantly, wear something that feels like you. The best maternity photos happen when you feel relaxed, beautiful, and present in the moment… not when you’re trying to fit a certain style.
As a Charleston maternity photographer, I’m always here to help you choose outfits that fit your location, your vision, and your comfort so your session feels effortless from start to finish.
