There are few moments more emotional than a surprise proposal, and Mary and Nico’s beautiful evening on Isle of Palms was one I’ll never forget. As a Charleston proposal photographer, I have the privilege of documenting some of life’s most meaningful milestones, and this one was filled with genuine emotion, thoughtful planning, and one incredible sunset.

A Surprise Proposal on Isle of Palms

Nico had everything planned perfectly.

He told Mary they were celebrating their anniversary with a sunset picnic on the beach at Isle of Palms. Naturally, she thought they were simply enjoying a romantic evening together. They carried a blanket and picnic basket down to the shoreline while I quietly photographed from a distance, ready for the moment everything would change.

What Mary didn’t know was that Nico had hidden the ring box underneath the blanket.

Once they found the perfect spot in the sand, they began setting up their picnic. As Mary turned to pour their drinks, Nico quickly got down on one knee. When she turned back around, she was met with the surprise of a lifetime.

The joy, excitement, and emotion on her face were unforgettable.

The Perfect Isle of Palms Sunset

As if the proposal wasn’t beautiful enough, nature decided to celebrate right alongside them.

The sky transformed into soft shades of pink, peach, and lavender, creating the dreamiest cotton-candy sunset over the Atlantic Ocean. It was one of those evenings that photographers hope for—a sky that perfectly complemented such a meaningful moment.
